http://mexico.cnn.com/salud/2012/02/26/africa-no-es-un-continente-oscuro-y-fallido-afropolitas

(CNN) Urban Youth and broad cultural knowledge: they are the afropolitas. A new generation of young Africans with global vision.

Afropolita The term first appeared in an article by the author Nigerian / Ghanaian Taiye Selasi, who wrote about African polyglot with a mixture of different ethnic groups living around the world, and that "non-citizens, but Africans of the world" he said.

The term has gained popularity, not only is used by hipsters in New York and European fashion capitals, but in the multicultural metropolis of Africa themselves.

But who are these afropolitas?

Berndah Nyakudya is editor of Afropolitan, which is produced in South Africa. Born in Zimbabwe, now living in London and Johannesburg, is the kind of international background depicting a afropolita.

"I have African roots, but as I have been trained worldwide, that helped shape my identity," he says.

Your magazine is aimed at successful urban thirtysomethings intelligent, ambitious, users of mobile and politically aware most of them described as afropolitas.

"A afropolita is someone that has its roots in Africa, who are educated in the world, but still has an interest in the continent (the work) has an impact, feed the continent and try to improve it," according Nyakudyua.

She also believes that the term can apply to non-African. "We like to think that no matter where you were born, if you are in the continent and love, that makes you afropolita" he says.

But for some people the term is not easy to define.

Tolu Ogunlesi is a Nigerian journalist living in Lagos. She studied a Masters in England and last year chaired a debate at the V & A Museum in London about what it means to be a afropolita. He says the term and its meaning is difficult to determine.

"It's one of those words that people give their own meaning, people interpret it as they want," he says. "Some people dismiss the concept entirely, saying that there is nothing that the people who call afropolitas have in common, and what they have in common is superficial."

He feels that the term is often applied only to those living in other continents.

"It is a difficult term because it assumes that combines (words) African and cosmopolitan" says Ogunlesi. "What we should mean is that an African person living in an urban environment, with a vision and a mindset that comes from urbanization, people living in Lagos, Nairobi, and have a world view."

Afropolitas outside Africa

"But there are people who consider afropolitas that is not here on the mainland, are out on the world capitals."

Minna Salami, who writes the blog Msafropolitan, is a true citizen of the world. Born in Finland Finnish mother and Nigerian father, has lived in Nigeria, Sweden, Spain and New York and now lives in London.

He agreed that some people see the Afropolitanism as something that exists only outside Africa, but says that in fact applies equally to people living on the continent.

"Some people have interpreted it as a movement in the Diaspora, but it is not at all," he says. "When you return to the original term of African and cosmopolitan, Africa has many cosmopolitan cities (...) and in those cities have art and music scenes and all kinds of creativity that is influenced by cosmopolitanism."

For her, is a movement that is politically aware and has the obligation to correct decades in which Africa has been wrongly represented as a "dark continent and failed."

"The afropolitas are a group of people who are either of African or are influenced by African culture, which emerged internationally using culture to change perceptions about Africa," he says.

Salami added that social networking has been key to the movement, and created a global citizens who are in tune with the same cultural trends and political issues.

Ogunlesi agrees. He says that although the common Nigerians are not defined as afropolitas, the preponderance of Internet and satellite television means that young Nigerian has a global vision and are exposed to much of the same pop culture that young people around the world.

And social networks also mean that contemporary African culture coolest quickly travels around the world. African culture and pop culture influenced by Africa is a key part of the movement.

The Afropolitanism implies a certain kind of attractive, with an aesthetic influenced by the African lifestyle magazine, Arise, and a soundtrack provided by everyone from the Nigerian musician Femi Kuti to the South African producer of tech township, Spoeke Mathambo.

But Nyakudya insists that to be a true afropolita requires more than just a multicultural background and correct record collection means having a commitment to make the continent a better place.

"From philanthropy to try to lobby for political reform, there are many things that need doing in Africa and if you're going to call yourself a afropolita, you need to show what you are doing to deserve being called that," says Mathambo.
