Nuria1999

Lotusflow3r by Prince or should we say for this, Pr1nce. We are told this is the rock album from Pr1nce. let's not wait any longer....

1.  From The Lotus

The instrumental track sounds like something from Pr1nce's still unreleased Undertaker album, very guitar and drum heavy.  Good introduction to let you know what you are about to experience.

2. Boom

Boom is sung in Pr1nce's high falsetto and has a great guitar breakdown that should have you by the middle of the song.  His guitar prowess is there and blends in well without any overproduction factors.

3. Crimson & Clover*

The song made by famous in the 60's by Tommy James and the Shondells has received the Pr1nce touch and it should become a favorite.  Please note, I am not really much on covers when it comes to Pr1nce only because the man is so talented, he really makes the songs his own.  It just comes too easy for him and with artists as great as him, I like the challenge of something new.

Like I said, this is Pr1nce's song now and when he kicks into "Wild Thing" live, you will agree.

3. The Morning After**

The Morning After is a song culled from Pr1nce's 2006 sessions and all I will say is after Adam Levine hears it, he may want Pr1nce to write some songs for the next Maroon 5 record.

4. 4ever

The reason why this love song stands out for me is because it is simplistic in the sense of not over recorded or over-dubbed.  Pr1nce ballads are synonymous sometimes for sexual overtones or writing with an innocence of first love.

He combines the two well, from the talk of holding hands, yet still putting himself somewhat more experienced as he could be your future lover, you could be his future girl.

5. Colonized Mind

The mellow-dramatic Pr1nce comes at you with a Colonized Mind. Is this about the music industry?  The New Evolution? Political Propaganda? All of the above. Regardless, we are being uploaded new information for us to download and process.

Pr1nce is getting serious and throwing down lessons while his guitar makes sure you get the point or else it will still be the blind leading the blind.

Background vocals on this track are Shelby J., Marva King, Bria Valente, and The Twinz.

6. Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful

This track may have been re-recorded since he put a sample up on the net in 2006, not sure. Regardless, this track seems to fit in more here then 3 years ago anyway.

The track is funky compared to rest of the record so far. He brags, he boasts, he attacks, shoot, he even censors himself.  Pr1nce invites you to his purple rock n roll and are you really going to say no? Not if you don't want to Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful.

Pr1ncely screams towards the end close out this track.

7. Love Like Jazz

The Girl From Ipanema anyone?  lol. The title is quite self explanatory and makes me think Pr1nce may have been listening to some of his "Parade" era stuff before recording this track.

I want a lover that can improvise/I want a lover that can make me cry/ I don't care what you learned in lovemaking school/u and me about to jam/make love like the first woman and man

Comparing notes of music to the sound and act of love making equals Pr1nce's love like jazz.

The guitar humps n thumps into the next track.....

8. 77 Beverly Park

If you were expecting a track like the last song he named after his previous place he lived, 3121, you would be wrong as it is an instrumental piece.

It sounds again like Parade era style jazz but could also fit in after Pr1nce's 1979 self-titled release, like say after the song "When We Are Dancing Close & Slow".

9. Wall Of Berlin

The way Prince starts this, you wonder if he is dreaming or he was transported to Germany.  He doesn't believe in luck but he is curious by the one girl who it is written upon who gets down like the wall of Berlin.

This track may not be as good as Colonized Mind but the so-called innocence of Pr1nce is there as they should just pretend they met, understanding that getting down like the wall of Berlin is something new and exciting, so much so, he can't tell if it is reality or just a dream.

10. $

This song. Pr1nce calls in Maceo and here comes Pr1nce's speeded up voice.

What difference does it make who has the most bank/It's just ink and chlorophyll.

He is not so much bragging or boasting but more like peepin' the scene at the club and seeing $ in the eyes of the boys and girls.

Pawns aside who's the King 2 and 4/With hot sauce from the Bay to Baltimore.

I like this track and glad it is on here more than MPLS0und just to bring a different flavor to this album. It is the first track that fades and makes me wonder if there is a longer version existing elsewhere?

11. Dreamer

Jimi, are you listening?

Pr1nce addresses racism in the colors of red, white, and blue.  Bringing up the disturbing image of Dr. Martin Luther King laying in a bloody pool.  It is not used to shock the listener, but more likely educate them thru his eyes.

If it was just a dream/Call me a dreamer 2

Pr1nce brings up race in the sense of a race to what and where are we going. His socially conscious view in a post President Barack Obama world, where racism may be swept under the carpet, but make no mistake about it, it's still there.

It's refreshing when Pr1nce gets topical to me and if the listener can grasp the story he is telling and hear it from his point of view instead of their own, then the song will stand out the way it should.

12. Back To The Lotus

A slow downed jam that returns from the 1st one obviously.  Towards the end is a distorted voice very much slowed down and was hard to make out what was being said.

The Lotusflow3r is more of a rock record than guitar record. Let's not get that twisted.  There is no dance rock like Let's Go Crazy or Fury or Bambi. This is more along the lines of Pr1nce's The Cross and Sign O The Times and it is refreshing regardless if it may not be upbeat.  You want upbeat?  Put on $ or Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful. Boom is the groove. It also features drums by Michael B. on 5 of the tracks.

Nuria1999

Here is the CD that John Blackwell referred to months ago as Controversy: The Saga Continues.  Not quite but it does capture some of the MPLS0UND from the 80's updated Linn-Drum style.

1. There'll Never B (Another Like Me)

Straight up, fans have been and will be divided on this.  Some will say it is funky, another will say it did not deserve to be on 1998's New Power Soul.

It's Prince bravado and arrogance that may have been missing in some of his songs of late with a long keyboard ending. I like the lyrics and would love to see a remix perhaps with a different arrangement.

2. Chocolate Box

So what's the deal/R u sportin' some wheels/or r u ridin' in a limousine

Q-Tip sings the hook chorus of having a box of chocolates that will knock the sox off any girl.  So far, the Internet reaction to this song has been pretty good.  Others are just allergic to chocolate or don't wear sox in the first place.

So what's the deal/r u gay or poppin' pills?/why u still wanna take my hand?/This discotech is 'bout to make me a wreck

This one will grow on people and I had a hard time stopping my foot from going with the beat when listening to it.

3. Dance 4 Me

The Linn-Drum again in full effect.  Prince uses his speeded up voice talking about how he loves it when you dance for him cuz it gets him hot, because you are shaking everything you got, he likes it because it's so sexy.

The vourestic Prince takes us on a trip and what turns him on and makes him say Hallelujah! He even drops a nod to fashion icon Christian Dior.

I like this one. (What a surprise huh?)  This def will get played again before going on to the next track.  I like the fun and funny Prince and this is him all over.  Hallelujah indeed!

4. U're Gonna C Me

This is a re-recorded version of his limited piano release of 2002 's"One Night Alone" and it gets the re-treatment.

With the Linn-Drum hooked up to sound like the sister of "The Beautiful Ones",  the vocals are different but not the words. To me, the previous was more romantic and didn't need the updated version.

Usually, when it comes to Prince, when he re-records one of his songs, it sounds so different, you could play it back to back and it would not be the same.  3121's "The Dance" is a perfect example.

It is sung in a higher falsetto towards the end.  Look, I am not going to skip this track, I just preferred the original because Prince totally kills it and it is one of his most under-appreciated ballads.

5. Here

Here comes Prince laying on his purple charm that will have the panties dropping before the middle of the song. He doesn't even have to be sexual. He has you at the first line where he asks how beautiful r u?

I just don't want you here/I just don't want u near me baby/Cuz I am scared I will cry and love you like crazy

It's different when ur'e grown/The wine don't taste the same/when ur alone/the size of the bed now seems like the biggest I've ever known

Sometimes, you don't need to be explicit to express your love and desires. It may be more fun but not always needed.

6. Valentina

This song is about Valentina, Salma Hayek's daughter....or is more about Valentina's mother?  I'll let you decide.

Hey Valentina tell ur mama/she should give me a call/when she get tired of runnin'/after u down the hall/

This song is gonna be a guilty pleasure like "Lolita" before her.  From lines like "bootyguards" and saying she is curvier than a fender stratocaster guitar and sure as Betty's Ugly. Oh man. Even love the cheesiness of  the line Penelope wants to Cruz.

It's playful and nothing serious and women, don't front if your man got a thing for Salma, you know she hot too!

7. Better With Time

This is a slow lovey dovey groove. I can just see the threads on the fan sites starting up about who this was written about.

This might seem strange/since so much time has passed/and since only 1 of us still looks the same/ur words not mine, baby/ur still fine yes u r/Like wine, you get better with time

Was this the song that Prince was talking about when he mentioned a song about Kristen Scott Thomas to Ann Powers of the L.A. Times in December? it can't be, can it?

If you liked songs like "One Kiss At A Time" and "Soul Sanctuary", this one is def for you.

8. Ol' Skool Company

For those wondering if this would sound like it did live, no it won't.  Prince's speeded up voice returns but the kicking groove is still the same.

He is grooving but still getting topical:

Fat cats on wall street/they got a bailout/while everybody else got to wait/ 700 billion but my old neighborhood/ain't nothing changed but the date

You have to hear this cut live and hopefully one day you will, because the way Prince closes it, it's true;

Tell ur'e friends Prince and the MPLS0und can't be beat...suckas

Hidden Track???  No More Candy 4 U

We were not able to listen to this one but here is a snippet of some interesting lyrics:

2 all the haterz on the Internet/Somebody's looking at u/No more candy 4 u/They got ur number now, fool/2 all the suckerz winning anything and thanking the Lord 4 what they do/No more candy 4 u

The disc clocks in at just under 50 minutes but it's groove should last with you a lot longer than that.  I like this one.  I like lotusflow3r too and to compare the two would be an injustice to you, Prince, and the music.  Some will say Prince has lost "it."  I don't think he has.  I am glad the lyrics will be online so people pay attention to what is said.

Nuria1999

Another new Prince project brings another Prince protege. This time, you are getting Bria Valente's Elixer whether you want it or not. So let's dive right in shall we?

1. Here Eye Come

The first word you hear is "Anticipation" and you do wonder if she is talking about her own debut or the lover she wants to take a shower over.  The breathy vixen is here, oh, and here she comes.

It is an OK track that I wouldn't ask to change if it came over the radio n seems like it would fit in on a rainy day mix cd.

2. All This Love

Where have I heard this before?  I heard it somewhere I just don't know where.

Space travel/We're not movin' at all/Eye look into ur eyes and start to fall/ clothes unravel/Bolivian paper doll/if you don't bounce/we could have a ball

Just what am I gonna do with all this love?  In all honesty, I just don't know because it's not working to her best advantages. It's a lil pop groove that would be better served to an A/C station.

3.  Home

This is a track that premiered as a snippet last April right here on this web site. It is not at all what I expected and more up tempo than I thought it would be.

Eye came down to find you here/celibate and all alone/travelling In a caravan of Isis tears/Eye've come to claim u 4 my own/Of Course ur'e scared the 1st time eye appear/cuz many seek your throne/but there is no need to worry/no need to fear/u should just feel at home

This is a song that will need a car with a good pair of speakers to enjoy.  Otherwise, you might just hit the forward button to the next track.

4. Something You Already Know

The breathy voice returns. She woke up this morning with the sweet aftertaste of loving you.  Well, hey now!

yes we'll be sho nuff kickin it later on 2nite/in ur'e favorite dress alright/and we'll be/doin what we do/back and forth on a rocking horse/a fantasy is better in real life of course/the name of the stallion is me/2 the east n west coast

Um, in all honesty, I did not know that.

I love it when you kiss me/yea you know right there/and when I tell you to lower your pitch/u get so deep it's hard to bear/eye love it when you pull my hair

She asks her lover later to taste the rainbow and something tells me she is not talking about skittles.

5. Everytime

This one features string arrangements by Claire Fisher and is the lead-off single with a video directed by Chris Robinson.  It's nice but does it catch your attention?  Love the strings and she looks pretty in the video but does it have my ear? It's missing something that Elixer has later on.

This one might be a grower on me but not sure yet. It may be the video, but I could imagine this coming over a beach resort stereo while catching some rays.

6. 2nite

2nite is a dance song with an upbeat tempo that mentions many formats within the song but stands out and stays in the dance format.  Don't try to call her shortie or be a brokeback buster if trying to pick her up because she is just not looking for that tonight.  From the male perspective, not so sure I am digging this song too much.

7.  Another Boy

Released to I-Tunes and serviced to L.A. radio only last year, the breathy voice returns proclaiming Minneapolis style. I like the song, it's cool. Just laid back and not trying to be anything it is not.  She is just professing to her lover there will never be another boy for her now that she has found him.

8.  Kept Woman

This was a leftover from his last protege Tamar Davis's unreleased CD. It wasn't a stand out when Tamar saying it and not when Bria does it either.  It's a good song but nothing spectacular.  It suits either fine and that is a compliment within itself.

9. Immersion

The voice is backed by a piano-keyboard taking you to a place where time has no meaning. Comparing inhibitions to bee stings.  It's not bad but it is not infectious either.

10. Elixer

The title cut features Claire Fisher string arrangement.  The breathy voice returns and it duets with Prince. Easily my favorite track.

The naughty lil Prince returns with his playfulness and it rubs all over Bria musically and in other ways.  This is what we expect from a Prince track; to not sound like something else and Elixer delivers.

Again, easily my favorite track and Prince's vocals on duets always bring out the best of his female singers and this is no exception.

The title cut ends the album on a very high note and you wish the passion that Bria has in this track carried over to all her material but it hasn't.  Perhaps if the breathy voice and the oooh wee babies are used more in the future, we may not write her off so quickly.  Plain and simple, make a video for Elixer and have it be as sexy as the song is, and we may just have something here.
